Overview

Observe the incredible ‘blue flames’ of Ijen Crater during a guided trek on Mt Ijen! Mount Ijen is an active volcano located on the border between Banyuwangi Regency and Bondowoso Regency, East Java, Indonesia. One of the most famous natural phenomena of Mount Ijen is the crater located at its peak. This mountain climbing can be started from several places and this tour will depart from.

On this day long excursion, head to East Java to start your hike to the summit. Witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon in the darkness and later be treated to superb views inside Ijen Crater. Bring your camera to capture the sight and meet local sulphur miners who toil on the mountain. Don’t forget to bring your dust mask! Numbers are limited to ensure a small-group experience.

En route, interact with the sulphur miners who tirelessly carry blocks of yellow sulphur weighing 132–176 pounds (60–80 kg) via bamboo pole baskets across their shoulders. Later, witness their mining activity by traditional methods using iron rods without safety equipment. Stop for a light Snack on the mountaintop before you’re guided back down for a closer look and some fantastic photo ops of Ijen Crater, Java’s largest acid lake, from the viewpoint.
