Overview
You can visit the Nemocón Salt Mine. A unique and beautiful place in Colombia where you can enjoy an underground marvel with over 500 years of history featuring surprising vernacular architecture, a remnant of traditional underground mining. Within its deep interior you will see extraordinary sights full of chambers and columns which are witness to great treasures such as the underground salt dome lying 80 metres below the surface as well as the 80-year-old salt waterfall.
You may also visit the Virgin of Carmen Chapel with its enormous rock sphere weighing more than one ton. This rock represents the world where the colour blue symbolises the sky, and white symbolises the Virgin’s purity, peace and hope, floating above the world and symbolising protection for everyone, especially the miners. In addition you can marvel at a heart-shaped 1600 kilo salt crystal carved in 1905 by the miner Miguel Sánchez, and aptly named “The heart of Nemocón” which is illuminated by a tenuous red light. All of these different sights offer the visitor an unforgettable experience.
