Kaiping is famous for its multifunctional styled houses called Diaolou, the unique structures are an amalgamation of Chinese as well as foreign architecture. Your expert guide walks you through the Diaolou which was originally built as a defense house or a watchtower during the Ming Dynasty and the early Qing Dynasty. These structures are reminiscent of ancient Greek and Roman flavors blended with Gothic, Islamic, Baroque and Rococo styles.

Head next to Zili Village, about 12kms from Kaiping, to the culturally significant town of Tangkou. Zili Village features some of the most beautiful, well preserved and densely positioned buildings. Fifteen houses in existence in this village are all ranked as cultural relics of national importance under the protection of the state. Stroll past Mingshilou, a five-storey residential house built in 1925 which is the most posh building in the locality.

Admire the incredible architecture of this hexagonal observation tower built in armored concrete. Fully furnished with complete living facilities on the inside, the outside of the house features solid iron doors and windows and is fondly called the Swallow Nest by locals.
