You will board a comfortable coach and set off for Windsor, which lies approximately 23 miles (37km) from central London. An English and Spanish-speaking guide will accompany you on the tour.
Windsor Castle is an Official Residence of Her Majesty The Queen and is said to be her favorite week-end retreat. With a history stretching back nearly 1000 years, it is is the world’s largest continuously occupied castle. The original fortified structure was built for William the Conqueror around the year 1080 as part of the defences of London. The castle gradually became a popular Royal residence because of the good hunting in the nearby forest.
The Castle was improved and enlarged over the centuries to create the magnificent building we see today. Highlights include: the State Apartments, St George's Chapel and Queen Mary's Dolls House.
State Apartments: These magnificent rooms are lavishly decorated and furnished with treasures from the Royal Collection. Look out for the wonderful paintings in the King’s Dressing Room, including a Rubens self-portrait, Van Dyck's famous triple portrait of Charles I, and ‘The Artist's Mother’, by Rembrandt. There are also many smaller items of interest. For example, a display cabinet in the Grand Vestibule contains the bullet that killed Admiral Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
St George's Chapel: Founded in the 13th century and extended over the centuries, St George’s Chapel is a glorious Gothic building (on a par with Henry VII's chapel in Westminster Abbey) and the burial place of 10 monarchs. Adjacent is the Albert Memorial Chapel with its exquisite marble panels, commissioned by Queen Victoria in commemoration of her beloved husband Albert. A key feature of the refurbishment was the magnificent vaulted roof, including gold mosaic pieces specially crafted in Venice. Queen Mary's Dolls House This exquisite Dolls' House was designed by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1924. Many of the miniature contents were made by the manufacturers of the full size article. Even the bottles in the wine cellar contain genuine vintage wine!
