Overview

Named after King George III of England, Georgetown, the capital of the state of Penang, is a rich and interesting blend of the old and new. Central Georgetown is relatively compact and steeped in history. Chinese, Indian and colonial British reminders make Georgetown a fascinating place to visit.

Penang is also the second smallest state in Malaysia. The place offers memorable sights and sounds and activities. It is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia.

Itinerary

You will be picked up from your hotel in an an air-conditioned vehicle for this tour which takes you to a selection of the major landmarks of Georgetown and is a great introduction to the rich history and diversity of the island.

You will drive by Fort Cornwallis originally a wooden structure built by the British East India Company around 1786. It was rebuilt with stone and brick in 1808. It is one of the most interesting historical landmarks in Georgetown. The fort has several antique canons. The most famous of the cannons is Seri Rambai, which dates back to 1613.

Local belief has it that childless women can become fertile by placing flowers in the barrel of the cannon and offering special prayers.

Drive through Queen Victoria Memorial Clock Tower, Clan Jetty and Street of Harmony where you get to see mosque, kovil, temple and church all in a single stretch of road.

Located near Fort Cornwallis, the Colonial Penang Museum houses a fine collection of old photographs, maps, charts and other historical relics. Another point of interest is the Wat Chayamangkalaram temple. It is really colourful and interesting temple and houses the fourth largest reclining Buddha statue in the world. The statue is draped in a gold-leafed saffron robe. Later, explore some of the finest products of a local favourite chocolate shop.

At the end of this tour you will be dropped off at your hotel.
