Discover Rome’s ancient, subterranean, Christian burial places on an Underground Rome Catacombs Tour!
With your Underground Rome Catacombs Tour tickets, you’ll uncover the many Christian catacombs located beneath the city of Rome. Unlike the pagans who cremated their dead, the followers of the new religion, Christianity, required burial upon their deaths. And, as a result, there are about 40 Christian catacombs, as well as six known Jewish catacombs in Rome. Travel between Rome’s hallowed grounds in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle as your guide brings you up to speed on the history of catacombs, including how and why they were constructed, how they were lost, and who later discovered them. It’s one of the best things to do in Rome!
You’ll start your tour at the Capuchin Crypt, which contains the remains of about 4,000 Capuchin friars. Its several small chapels are rather morbidly adorned with human bones, including countless skulls. You’ll also have the opportunity to peruse the Capuchin Museum, which has documented the Capuchin Order’s achievements throughout its history. Then, go underground at the Catacombs of Santa Priscilla and plumb its vast tunnel network.
You’ll visit Case Romane del Celio. Situated under the 3rd century villa of a wealthy patrician family, you’ll find frescoes by the most famous artists of the day, immaculately preserved for posterity.
