Overview

Popularly known as the Living Museum, the Sarawak Cultural Village, located about 35 kilometres from Kuching, showcases Sarawak's rich cultural diversity. Built on a six hectares site at the foothill of the legendary Mt. Santubong, it is quaintly landscaped with a manmade lake at the centre surrounded by 7 authentic replicas of ethnic houses: the Bidayuh centre house and longhouse, the Iban longhouse, the Penan hut, the Orang Ulu longhouse, the Melanau Rumah Tinggi, the Malay house and the Chinese farmhouse. Displayed in each house are many artefacts made by individual dwellers. Demonstration of arts and crafts like beadworks, wood and bamboo carvings, pua weaving and straw weaving can be seen while touring Village. You may learn how to throw a Malay spinning top, shoot a Penan blowpipe or pick out a tune on an Orang Ulu sape. A vibrant cultural show is also put up by various ethnic groups.

Itinerary

A scenic drive of about 35 minutes through the picturesque Kuching countryside brings you to the Sarawak Cultural Village, a wonderful microcosm of the state's rich and colourful cultural diversity. The village is built at the foot of the legendary Mount Santubong in a beautiful landscape setting. Seven ethnic houses are replicated to provide visitors a glimpse into the varied culture of the land. From the Bidayuh round huts, the Iban longhouse to the stilt-houses of the Melanaus, each ethnic house is unique. While touring the Village you can get an insight into traditional activities of the past such as tattooing, blow-pipe making, weaving of the "pua kumbu" and top spinning.

The rich cultural heritage in Malaysia, presented in the form of dances and music by various ethnic groups, is one of the highlights of the visit. The grand cultural show which lasts about one hour is performed in the Village theatre. Take delight in jiving away to the traditional Malay beats during the lively cultural performances.

At the end of the tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel in Kuching.
