Overview
Located only 45 minutes away from La Fortuna, this magical adventure takes you through a maze of stone underground hallways and natural chambers, where you will set eye on a series of mind-bending rock formations, such as stalactites and stalagmites, including the famous La Papaya. Mind your head for bats and your feet for spiders!
These caves date from the Miocene period, as far as 20 million years ago, and were discovered by the Guatuzo aborigines. Although originally underwater, centuries of tectonic shifts eventually brought them to the surface. That's why, as you wander through this dark palace, you will come across ancient corals, whimsical underground rivers and countless marine fossils.
Seeing as there will be a great deal of wading into rivers and waterfalls in the higher part of the cave, if you don't want to be cold and clammy by the end of the day, we recommend you wear light clothes and hiking shoes for the trip, and carry some spare clothes with you to change into once you are done exploring these fascinating hidden landscapes.
