Just 0.44 square km in size, the world’s smallest sovereign state can’t be measured in size alone. With the Museums housing a legion of epic masterpieces one after the other - Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel and Raphael’s Rooms, to name a few - and holding the largest Catholic church in the world, St Peter’s Basilica, all within its borders - Vatican City is a top attraction in Rome that make for an awe-inspiring and ever-daunting experience.
Make the most of your Vatican ticket and visit St Peter’s in the early morning before the crowds, followed by a tour around the Vatican Museums afterward. This site remains busy year-round, although January and February promise less crowded Vatican tours.
The Museums are open every day, from 9 am to 4 pm, except Sunday, while St Peter’s Basilica is usually open from 7 am till 7 pm, depending on the season.
Buses to the city are cost-effective and quick, while taxis also travel to and from the Vatican regularly. If you’re taking the metro, alight at Ottaviano-S. Pietro station, just outside the Vatican walls.
St. Peter’s Basilica, St Peter’s Square, Sistine Chapel, Gardens of Vatican City and Vatican Museums are top Vatican attractions that should not be missed.
Don’t forget to fuel yourself up while taking strolls in the Vatican City. Some amazing dining options that serve exquisite Roman dishes and are easy on the pocket include Forno Feliziani, Ristorante Arlù, La Locanda di Pietro, and Ristorante dei Musei.
