Our tips for Colosseum

  • Think ahead – The queues can be long at this Roman attraction. You can get skip-the-line Colosseum entry tickets and audio guide private tours, which is a handy way to explore more of this rich historical site and learn epic tales of the times.
  • Evening Rome-ing. The Colosseum firmly closes its doors to visitors an hour from sundown, which can be as early as five in winter. The arena’s facade is particularly beautiful at night, however. Take yourself down to one of the nearby restaurants and enjoy the amphitheater’s grand exterior, alfresco style.
  • Tread carefully. These ancient ruins have uneven surfaces and wonky paths. On your tour of the Colosseum, watch your step and wear comfortable shoes to avoid any trip-ups.
  • Save money. A visit to the Colosseum shouldn’t break the bank. Tickets are actually on the cheap side for a top attraction, while combo tickets or deals like the Roman Forum and skip-the-line access tickets, and Rome Hop on Hop off One Run tickets ensure extra bang for your buck.

Good to know

Nestled in the capital city of Italy, Colosseum receives over 8 million visitors each year. Known for its remarkable architecture and spectacular artworks, Colosseum stands tall as an enduring Roman icon. Once the site of an artificial lake, Colosseum remained a spectacle of battle and brutality regularly entertaining an audience of 50,000 people throughout the Empire’s rule.

While time and Mother Nature may have eroded this site, still today it proudly holds all the marvels of yesteryear, remaining an awe-inspiring tribute to imperial Roman barbarity, power, and prowess. It was first known as the Flavian Amphitheatre after the Vespasian family who planned the build. Its name was later changed to recognise the Colosso di Nerone, a giant bronze statue (around 30 metres in height) of Nero that stood nearby.

The first games were held as a celebration of the Colosseum’s opening in 80AD. They lasted 100 days and saw the slaughtering of some 5000 animals. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, it was used as a castle, cemetery and even a housing complex through the Middle Ages. It later fell into disrepute until restoration efforts began in the late 1900s.
