The Spanish steps are named so because the Spanish embassy was situated right there, and the steps were part of it. They were built in the 18th Century to connect the embassy with the Trinita Dei Monti church (which was under French patronage!)

Designed in Rococo style, Spanish Steps start from the Piazza di Spagna square to connect to the French monastery church Trinita dei Monti. Also known as Scalinata di Spagna, Spanish Steps consist of 138 steps with a mix of curves, straight lines, and terraces. Created by the architect Francesco de Sanctis, they are popular among historians and art enthusiasts for their unique design.

These are the widest set of stairs in Europe so there is plenty of room to find a space to sit and reflect without getting in people’s way. The steps were featured in the film Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. Perhaps you can relive their moment from the film!
