This is an interesting and informative tour of Budapest. Delve in the history and culture of Budapest and unravel many of its secrets. Visit the Buda Castle, City Park & all the major sights in Budapest as you walk through this lovely city.

Enjoy a visit to the Heroes’ Square, Matthias Church and the Danube Promenade.

What's the plan

The walking tour starts at the Opera House from where you take a short ride on the Millennium Metro out to Heroes' Square and City Park. Enjoy an informative introduction to Hungary's rich history and culture through the stories of its great kings. Stroll through City Park to visit Vajdahunyad Castle and peek inside the Szechenyi Baths to learn about the unique bath culture of Hungary. Enjoy a metro ride back towards the city center and stop at the end of Andrassy Avenue.

Head to St. Stephen’s Basilica (outside only) before taking a break in a café and tuck into a Hungarian dessert and a coffee or soft drink (included in the tour). After your refreshment break, make your way to the riverside to see the famous blue Danube. Soak in amazing views of the UNESCO World Heritage panorama with Buda Castle, Matthias Church, Royal Palace and Gellert Hill with the Citadel and cross the river via the famous Chain Bridge.

The tour ends with a walk to the Buda Castle District. Explore the old cobblestone streets and alleys and end the tour in front of the Matthias Church and Fisherman’s Bastion.

Itinerary

The tour begins from your local tour operator's office, Located on Lazar Utca 16 in the VI. District, just behind the Opera House at 1000h (10:00am). You will be accompanied by an English-speaking guide who will give you an overview of the Hungarian history and culture. You will visit:

Heroes’ Square and City Park: The Heroes’ Square pays a tribute to those who played an important role in the history of Hungary. The spacious square with the 40 metre high column is a prominent attraction of the city. You will then walk through Budapest’s most popular park, the City Park, to see the Vajdahunyad Castle complex built for the world EXPO in 1896 displaying typical Hungarian architecture. You will also get a chance to peek into the bath house at Szechenyi Baths.

• Next we take the Millennium metro back towards the city center and stop off at the Opera House, teaching you about the significance of the Opera to the locals.

• Then we continue to see the big areas of Deák Square and Elizabeth Square and onward to St. Stephen’s Basilica (a peek inside when open). Afterwards we take a break in a café for a taste of Hungary’s famous pastry called “retes” which is a strudel. Here the guests will get two pastries and a coffee or mineral water (included in the tour price). After our refreshment break we head towards the center stopping at Vaci walking street and Vorsomarthy Square, and head on down to the riverside’s famous Danube Promenade. Here we will marvel at the spectacular view of Gellert Hill, Citadel, Buda Hills and the Buda Castle District. We stop at the Vigado, a famous concert hall before crossing the famous Chain Bridge You will also get your picture taken with the famous bronze statue, Little Princess.

Buda Castle District: View the Buda Royal Palace which belonged to the Hapsburg monarchs. The palace was completely destroyed in WW 2 and was restored afterwards with some of the original medieval parts. The Fisherman’s Bastion is one of the most attractive spots of this district. It offers a grand panorama of the entire city. Enjoy a visit to the Matthias Church which was constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries. It is a Gothic Style church which during the Turkish invasion was a Mosque and is now a Jesuits’ Church.

The tour returns to the Budapest Castle District at approximately 1330h (1:30pm).

The tour includes climbing stairs and walking uphill when visiting Buda Castle.
