Bolivia's main archaeological site. Covering 30 hectares, it features a collection of temple remains from the Tiwanaku culture, including the Kalasasaya temple (126 by 117 meters), which houses the famous Gate of the Sun, the semi-subterranean temple with its enigmatic tenon heads, and the remains of Kantataita, Putuni, and Kericala. The pyramids of Akapana and Pumapunku can also be seen.
This archaeological site is among the oldest of the Andean cultures, and its remains are striking for their monumental scale and the perfection of their construction and decorative techniques. The surrounding area includes a high plateau between two mountain ranges, some cultivated fields, and native communities.
The local crafts are also noteworthy: small, carefully carved stones, modeled after Tiwanaku monoliths, amulets, and Aymara artifacts. Similarly, the pottery, crafted with great skill, such as ceremonial vessels, incense burners, sun gates, and others, is offered to visitors.
