Make your way to Jetty 1 Male
Same as the starting point.
Embark on a grand exploration of Malé with this full day walking tour, taking you to all the key points of interest in the city, as well as on a trail through Villimale and its marine conservation efforts, and finally ending the day with a traditional hedhikaa experience.
Malé City Walking Tour
Beginning with an introduction to the city and the harbour area, an integral point for island economies, we will also get a peek into the Maldives’ education system as we pass by the oldest school in Malé. While visiting Hukuru Miskiiy or the Old Friday Mosque and the tomb of Abu Al Barakaath, you will understand why the Maldives converted to Islam and how the faith underpins everyday life. Enjoy some refreshments at a local cafe.
Continuing our journey, we will stop at the November 3rd Memorial and hear about the heroism of 8 brave military servicemen at the 1988 Maldives coup d'état. We will also treat you to a taste of the country’s Sultanate history, wandering through the Sultan Park. Walking back towards the harbour area, we will pass by the Grand Friday Mosque and the Islamic Centre, Male’s famous architectural landmarks and onto Jumhooree Maidan – Independence Square, from where you can dive deeper into the symbolism of the national flag as well as spot all the major government buildings.
Lose yourself to the incredible sights, sounds and smells of the bustling local market as well as the fish market, a perfect place to get a glimpse of the daily lives, chat with the local vendors, learn about native produce as well as sample some indigenous fruits or vegetables and homemade sweets for a truly mesmerising experience.
Villimale and 'Save The Beach'
Having formerly been a resort as well as a prison, Villimale was ‘developed’ to accommodate the ever growing population of Male. Stepping off the ferry in Villimale, one can easily visualise how the city islands would have been prior to urban modernisation. The 60-minute walking tour is the perfect opportunity to gain an insider’s perspective into the local way of ‘city’ life , while learning how the local community together with the NGO ‘Save the Beach’ have been working to protect both their island and ocean environment. Your guide will regale you with some incredible knowledge on the Maldivian ecosystems and conservation challenges arising from coastal development while you observe the before and after of reclamation works and harbor development.
Hedhikhaa Experience
Our final taste of Maldivian culture comes with a traditional hedhikaa experience, a ritual locals follow everyday between 3 - 5pm where they enjoy black tea paired with traditional sweet and savoury snacks, and talk about their everyday lives. Take some time to relax from your daylong sightseeing and observe the humdrum of the city from afar before heading back into the madness!
