Overview

The city of Nuremberg is one of the most famous cities in Germany and has been the backdrop to many of the most dramatic moments of the 20th Century. It was both the place where the Third Reich demonstrated their power, and where they were finally held to account during the Nuremberg war crimes tribunal.

Visit the historic old town and the Nazi Party Rally Grounds. Learn from your knowledgeable guide why Hitler transformed 11 square kilometres of the city into a vast rally ground. Nuremberg was the old seat of the imperial parliament whose legacy Hitler sought to distort by hosting the special sitting of his puppet Reichstag that passed the notorious ‘Nuremberg race laws’. It denied citizenship to Jewish Germans and was an ominous prelude to the coming Holocaust. Today the old rally grounds host a major Third Reich Documentation Centre that maps this painful history in detail and represents evidence of Nuremberg’s determination to come to terms with its past.

See the medieval city walls, the striking 15th-century gothic church – Lorenzkirche, the 14th century Frauenkirche (Church of Our Lady) dominating the Main Market. You will also be taken to the 700-year-old Hauptmarkt town market square, a market place that bustles with life throughout the year. You will come across shops selling fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers and a range of fine cheese. Also see the stunning Kaiserburg, an ancient imperial castle.

After exploring Nuremberg’s rich heritage, take a train ride back to Munich.
