If food and cooking interest you, here’s your opportunity to learn the basics of Malaysian cooking and the ingredients that make it so appetizing! Understand how the lives of people in Penang revolve around their unique food and how it brings them closer at Teluk Bahang Market, a local bazaar at a welcoming fishing village that sells everyday rations like meats, fish, vegetables, fruits and dry goods.
Later, check out an unlimited variety of food plants, spices and herbs, efficiently farmed at the Tropical Spice Garden. Meet a local chef in the cooking school and cook some Malaysian food using fresh ingredients from the garden. Feel proud of your culinary skills and later savour a self-prepared authentic Malaysian meal.
Start this morning tour with a comfortable pick-up from your hotel in Georgetown or Batu Feringghi. Enjoy your drive to Teluk Bahang, a welcoming fishing village located on the northwestern tip of Penang Island. Visit its market that acts as a common meeting place for the local villagers every morning where they socialize and enjoy breakfast besides buying fresh produce for daily cooking. Explore the marketplace with varied stalls selling fresh cuts of meats, fish, vegetables, fruits and dry goods. Enjoy a comfortable shopping experience at this spacious and airy market and witness how the locals bargain for their everyday groceries.
Later, visit the Tropical Spice Garden to explore the spice terraces where you can see many well-known spices growing. Learn how to cook authentic Malaysian dishes at the cooking school, which is located within the lush and peaceful setting of the garden. It is a hands-on experience where participants prepare their own meal from scratch using traditional methods. Each menu always uses the freshest herbs and/or dried spices - some of which you will encounter in the garden. Some dishes will also require the grinding of spices using a pestle and mortar. The chefs will share useful insights into the health benefits of the ingredients and dishes throughout, while also explaining their cultural and historical significance. Enjoy your lunch with a view out on the patio before returning to the hotel.
