This tour begins with a comfortable hotel pick up in the morning. Enjoy an hour’s drive from Central Seoul to reach your first destination- Suwon Hwaseong Fortress, the official fortress of Suwon-si, Gyeonggi-do. Built from 1794 to 1796 by King Jeongjo of the Joseon Dynasty to house and honour the remains of his executed father, this fortress now provides a scientific, architectural, and artistic insight into Korea’s past. Witness the unique architecture of this 18th century structure that has been designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site and even as Historical Monument No. 3!
Move to the next landmark – Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, another must-visit historical monument in South Korea located within the walls of the Hwaseong Fortress. This ornate residential palace of King Jeongjo was used when he travelled during war times or when he visited tombs. Haenggungs (meaning ‘temporary shelter) were primarily used by kings during war times to avoid attacks from enemy troops. Take a break to enjoy a special lunch containing traditional Korean delicacy of either Samgyetang or Bulgogi.
Finally, get a taste of the traditional culture from the late Joseon period that existed several centuries ago at Korean Folk Village. A popular tourist destination for both Koreans and foreigners, this living museum displays elements that bring to light the lifestyle of yesteryears. Meet potters, weavers, blacksmiths and other artisans who still follow traditional trade practices. Also, explore the 270 traditional houses and a small amphitheater for folk music and dance performances!
