In 1488, the Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias stumbled upon what is now known as the Cape of Good Hope. Initially dubbed the "Cape of Storms" due to its perilous waters, it was later renamed by King John II of Portugal to the "Cape of Good Hope," signifying optimism for a sea route to the East Indies. Contrary to common belief, however, the Cape of Good Hope is not Africa's southernmost point; that distinction lies with Cape Agulhas, approximately 150 kilometers (93 miles) to the southeast. The treacherous sea conditions surrounding the Cape of Good Hope have earned it the moniker of the "Shipwreck Coast."
December to March are summer months and the best time to visit the Cape of Good Hope. However, if you want to visit in the shoulder season, then November is your best bet. January and February are the windiest months but you can expect lower prices on accommodation during these months.
Located at the southernmost point of the Cape Peninsula in South Africa, the Cape of Good Hope lies within the bounds of Table Mountain National Park.
It is around 70 kms away from Cape Town and takes approximately 2 hours to reach. You can choose to go via car or train. The opening hours are from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, so make sure to plan your visit accordingly.
Numerous hiking trails wind their way around the Table Mountain National Park to diverse viewpoints and attractions across the Cape of Good Hope region. Among the favored routes are the Cape Point Trail and the picturesque path leading to the Cape Point Lighthouse.
