Your fascinating Half-Day Cape Winelands Tour experience begins when you are picked up at your hotel (City Center, Green Point and Sea Point Hotels).
This enchanting excursion begins with a tour through historic Stellenbosch, an architectural jewel that serves as the historic heart of the country’s wine region.
A gracious blend of 18-century Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian buildings is evident as we drive down Dorp Street, where massive Oaks still shade original water furrows, then enjoy a wine tasting in the Stellenbosch area.
Stellenbosch dates back to 1679 and is the second-oldest wine-producing region in South Africa. Thanks to the mild weather and the unique ‘terroir’, Stellenbosch wines have earned numerous international awards over the years.
The region is famous for its high-quality reds. Cabernet Sauvignon performs exceptionally well here and Stellenbosch produces some of the best examples in South Africa. Merlot, Pinotage and Shiraz are other notable reds. Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are the prominent whites. Excellent brandies are also distilled in the Stellenbosch area.
The town of Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 by the Governor of the Cape Colony, Simon van der Stel, who named it after himself. He planted many oak trees to grace the streets and homesteads, thus leading to the town being called the ‘City of Oaks’ (Eikestad in Afrikaans).
After enjoying the many charms of Stellenbosch, you’ll be driven back to Cape Town and dropped at the point where you were picked up.
