The Haven of Peace first grew famous during the mid-19th century when the Sultan of Zanzibar recognised its potential as a safe port and turned this once humble fishing village into a thriving trading centre. Today, the city is a fascinating mix of African and Western styles with dusty street markets contrasting sharply with the tree-lined boulevards of the government business district.
