Overview

Kings Canyon, besides being a topographical gem displaying Nature’s raw power, is one of the closest to representing the unrestrained wilderness of the Aussie Outback. This tour presents you to the full extent of its magnificent presence, taking you on the Rim Walk or the Creek Bed Walk (if you want something less physically demanding) as well as a visit to the Garden of Eden and a stop at Kings Creek Station.

Located in the heart of Watarrka National Park, Kings Canyon lies in an ancient Australian landscape that is sacred ground for the Ulpanyali and Lilla people - doused not just in exquisite natural beauty but whole lot of cultural fervour. Both the Rim and Creek Bed walks are equally spectacular - the first takes you on a trail along the rim while the latter takes you through the bed of the canyon. The Rim Walk, however, is steep hike and requires a very good level of fitness while the Creek Bed walk can be done by beginners as well.

Departing early in the morning, our first stop for the day is the Kings Creek Station, home to cattle and camels, where we will relax for a while and dig into a delicious breakfast. Once we arrive at the Canyon, you can select which trail to embark on.

Post the walk, we will break out for lunch at Kings Canyon Resort (at your own expense) before beginning our return journey. You can be dropped of at the Ayers Rock Resort. The scenic drive back is accompanied by your driver’s live commentary on Kings Creek Station, its long history, the cultural significance of the Red Centre as well as all about the rare flora and fauna one can find here.

Rim Walk and The Garden of Eden

This 6km hike is truly inspirational, to say the least, and a once-in-a-lifetime experience that lets you climb up a 100 metre cliff face and walk around the rim of the canyon. Although extremely strenuous, the view and sensations that accompany you along the way make it absolutely worth it. Impressive views of sandstone walls, grottos, chasms and cliffs unfold besides the bewitching wilderness of Watarrka National Park as you reach the top - and trust us when we say this, the feeling of conquering a canyon is unparalleled!

The Rim Walk also takes you down between the sandstone cliffs to the elusive Garden of Eden, a natural spring waterhole in the George Gills Range surrounded by local and exotic plants such as gums, bonsai looking trees as well as enormous prehistoric ferns, creating a truly unique landscape.

Creek Bed Walk

Although quite easy, this walk is equally great for experiencing the unrestrained outback landscape. Taking you across the bed of the Canyon, the 2km stroll treats you to fantastic views of the rim and the grand presence of this topographical gem as you trail right through it! Along the way, our extremely knowledgeable guide will share intriguing facts on the history as well as the local geology, including the lowdown on the area’s exceptional biodiversity, such as the MacDonnell Ranges Cycad. Since this is a shorter walk, you’ll have a lot of time in hand so why not indulge yourself in a thrilling helicopter ride through the canyon (at your own expense) or just cool off with a refreshing dip at the Kings Canyon Resort pool.
