Many of the pieces you’ll see in the Van Gogh Museum were unsold and inherited by Vincent’s brother, Theo. Theo died 6 months after Vincent and the paintings then fell to Theo’s wife, Johanna. She sold his works to make him more well-known but also kept some of his works as her personal collection.

After her death, her son inherited these works. Later, the works of art were displayed at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam for many years. In 1962, the collection changed hands and was given to the Vincent van Gogh Foundation. In 1963, the Dutch government commissioned a design for the museum from the Dutch architect, Gerrit Rietveld. But he died a year later. The museum was finally completed in 1973.
