Built in 1782 during the reign of King Rama I, Grand Palace served as the official residence of the Thai King for over 150 years. The Palace complex sports intricate Thai architectural details and features such as ceramic mosaics, colourful glass, articulated roofs with spires and more. The Palace has elaborate and lush gardens such as Dusit Maha Prasat Garden which features a gorgeous pond with lotus flowers.
The Palace no longer serves as the official residence but it does host various ceremonies throughout the year. Inside you can find the Temple of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Phra Kaew, which is another popular tourist attraction. In 1991, it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site for its cultural significance.
The Grand Palace is located in the government district of downtown Bangkok, situated between the Chao Phraya River, Sanam Luang Park, and Wat Pho.
The Grand Palace can be easily accessed by taking the Chao Phraya Express to Tha Chang Pier, or by taking a taxi or tuk-tuk from the city center. However, be prepared for potential delays due to heavy traffic in Bangkok.
The Grand Palace is accessible to visitors daily from 8:30 am until 3:30 pm.
To avoid both crowds and heat, it is recommended to visit the temples during the early morning hours on weekdays, especially during the cooler and drier months of November to February. Alternatively, the rainy season of July through October can also be a good time to visit, as it tends to be less crowded.
Other popular nearby attractions include - Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew), Temple of the Reclining Buddha (Wat Pho), Bangkok National Museum.
