A millennia-old gothic church, Westminster Abbey was built as a Benedictine monastery in the 10th century. It has been the site of many royal weddings and coronations. Prince William and Kate Middleton tied the knot at the Abbey in 2011. Before that, Queen Elizabeth the second highness also married the Duke of Edinburgh in 1947. It is a site of religious importance and has also been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Even though the church has been founded thousands of years ago, it is still functional. The church has its own flag as well. It has also been a burial ground for many notable poets and personalities such as Geoffrey Chaucer, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens and Ted Huges. The Coronation Chair was built by King Edward I and has been in coronation since 1309. It is an excellent example of medieval English craftsmanship and is placed in the Lady Chapel in the Abbey.
The Abbey has also been used as a filming location for several popular films and shows like The Crown, Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.
