In 1969, the water stopped flowing over the American Falls for six months. An earthen dam was built so scientists could study the geology of the falls. On June 30th, 1859, Charles Blondin, a.k.a. Jean François Gravelet, became the first person to cross the Niagara gorge on a tightrope.
