Enjoy a visit to Murano, famous for its glass-making tradition and watch glassblowers hard at work. Admire a huge collection of glass art before exploring the island on your own. Visit the picturesque island of Burano, known for its vibrantly coloured houses and its tradition of lace-making. Visit a building where women have been sewing lace for generations and examine beautiful lace samples on display!
What's the plan:
Meet the tour at the statue of man on a horse at San Zaccaria vaporetto stop, in front of the lagoon. It is advised that you reach the meeting point at least 15 minutes in advance.
The Island of Murano is a short boat trip from the San Zaccaria vaporetto stop in Venice. Admire the scenic views during the boat trip as your guide describes the sights you pass. At the beautiful island of Murano, known for its glassblowing tradition, watch a glassblower in action and admire the huge collection of glass art before strolling around the island. The story goes that the glassblowers of Murano were the only people in Europe who knew how to create mirrors and their skills were so valued that they were not allowed to leave Venice for threat of execution!
Another lovely boat trip will take you to the island of Burano, a vibrant island famous for its coloured houses and its centuries old tradition of lace-making. Legend has it that fishermen painted their houses in bright colours to make them more distinguishable from a distance. Explore the streets of Burano and visit a building where women for generations have painstakingly stitched lace. Listen to informative commentary on the art of lace-making and then take the time to examine the beautiful lace samples on display.
The tour ends in the evening at the dock in front of Hotel Gabrielli Sandwirth (near San Marco).
